US diplomats swap cars for tuk-tuks

Four US diplomats in New Delhi are leaving their cars behind and driving tuk-tuks to their workplace.

Taking inspiration from Ann L Mason, a US diplomat who was already using a tuk-tuk, three other diplomats, Shareen J Kitterman, Ruth Holmberg and Jennifer Bywaters have bought personalised tuk-tuks.

Mason, a vehicle enthusiast, said that while driving in big armoured vehicles in Pakistan she would always want to be in an auto-rickshaw similar to those circulating in the streets.

"So, when I got to India and I had the opportunity to buy one, I took it immediately," she said.

Diplomats Kitterman and Holmberg drive pink and black autorickshaws on the streets of New Delhi to work at the US Embassy.

According to US diplomat Ruth Holmberg, the vehicle also gives her an opportunity to connect with people.

"I think that diplomacy is not all high level and formal," she says.

"Diplomacy is people meeting people, people getting to know each other, getting a chance to build relationships and that's what I can do with the auto."

Mexican Ambassador to India, Melba Pria, also uses a tuk-tuk for personal use.
