‘US turned into a garbage can’
Donald Trump has taken to the stage in Tempe, Arizona, and taken aim at Kamala Harris over immigration.
Trump started off his speech in front of several thousand people at Mullet Arena by railing at Harris for the Biden administration’s record on the border, which he says has “unleashed” an “army of migrant gangs” who are “waging a campaign of violence and terror against our citizens”.
“We’re like a garbage can for the world,” Trump said.
Trump, who has escalated his already dark and inflammatory rhetoric in the race’s final stretch, is accusing Harris of perpetrating “a wicked betrayal of America” and having “orchestrated the most egregious betrayal that any leader in American history has ever inflicted upon our people”, even though crime is down.
He says the record “disqualifies her from even thinking about being president”.
Trump invited applause for the family of Nicholas Quets, a US Marine from Tucson who was killed in Mexico while driving to the beach in Puerto Penasco.
Puerto Penasco is a small town on the Sea of Cortez. Known as Rocky Point in English, it has the closest beach to Phoenix and Tucson and is so popular with tourists from north of the border that it’s often known as “Arizona’s beach”.
A vehicle with armed people drove up alongside Quets and gunmen opened fire, authorities in the Mexican state of Sonora said.
“It was brutal,” Trump said, asking Quets’ relatives to stand. The crowd gave an extended applause.
“A beautiful guy, a beautiful family and we are so sorry for your loss,” Trump added.
During an evening event in Las Vegas, Trump compared Harris to “a vulture” in the way he characterised her approach to tax increases.
“Even after Kamala wrecked your economy with inflation, she came after you with tip income, like sort of like a vulture would do,” Trump said. “If she gets four more years, Kamala Harris will pick your pockets.”
Trump was joined by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Vivek Ramaswamy and former US Representative for Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard.
His speech focused on tax cuts, immigration, and jabs at Harris.
“She can't do the job. She can't put two sentences together. She's an international joke,” Trump said.
More than 30 million voters have already cast their ballots as of Thursday evening, according to tracking data from the Election Lab at the University of Florida.
More than 13 million of those votes were in person, with more than 17 million by mail ballot, according to the data.
