Starmer, Erdogan to talk jets sale

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to discuss the pending sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkey when he meets President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara today. The visit, Starmer’s first to Turkey since taking office last year, comes as the NATO allies deepen defence cooperation, and as Ankara seeks to leverage the advanced jets to bolster its air power and make up ground on regional rivals including Israel. Last week it was reported that Ankara had proposed to its European allies and the US ways it could swiftly procure advanced fighter jets, amid talks to buy 40 Eurofighter Typhoons as well as US F-16s and F-35s.

Powell elected Labour deputy leader, urging lean to left

Britain’s governing Labour Party said Lucy Powell had won a vote of members to become the party’s deputy leader, a victory for a candidate whom Prime Minister Keir Starmer sacked as a government minister last month. Powell defeated education minister Bridget Phillipson by a 54-46 margin on a low 17 per cent turnout, and called on Starmer to stop courting voters tempted by right-wing immigration policies and instead focus on bolstering left-wing support. ”We won’t win by trying to out-Reform Reform, but by building a broad progressive consensus,“ Powell said in her victory speech, saying the party needed to focus on its traditional values around reducing inequality.

Zelensky shores up support in London

Britain has urged fellow allies of Ukraine to reach a deal to use frozen Russian assets to strengthen its hand for any future peace talks, as President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in London for talks with those allies. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said he would also press the “Coalition of the Willing” countries to take Russian oil and gas off the global market and give Kyiv more long-range missiles.
