EU steps up pressure on Israel

The European Commission will seek sanctions and a partial trade suspension against Israel over the war in Gaza. The announcement by commission president Ursula von der Leyen marks a sharp turnaround for the longtime supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The 27-nation EU is deeply divided in its approach to Israel and the Palestinians, and it’s unclear whether a majority will be found to endorse the sanctions and trade measures.

Doha attack escalates tension

Qatari security forces and emergency fire personnel have deployed around the site of an Israeli attack on Hamas’ political leaders who had gathered in the capital of the energy-rich Middle East country to consider a US proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Tuesday’s strike on a building in Doha killed at least six people in a neighbourhood that is home to foreign embassies and schools. The strike on the territory of a US ally drew widespread condemnation from countries in the Mideast and beyond. It also marked a dramatic escalation in the region and risked upending talks aimed at ending the war and freeing hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.

Russian strike kills 24 pensioners

A Russian glide bomb struck a village in eastern Ukraine as people stood in line in the open air to collect their monthly pension. The blast killed at least 24 people and injured 19 others, the Ukraine Emergency Service said. The bomb hit the Donetsk region village of Yarova at around 11am local time, authorities said. The village lies less than 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the frontline. Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said 23 of the dead were pensioners.

Law enforcement will now try to “put the puzzle together” of how the family lived, found food and avoided detection by searchers for so many years, New Zealand’s Police Commissioner Richard Chambers said.

Teen pilot freed from Antarctica

An American teen pilot who has been stuck in a Chilean airbase in Antarctica for two months after landing a plane there without permission has been released back to the mainland, where he is to pay $30,000 in penalties. Ethan Guo, who was 19 when he began his fundraising mission for cancer research, was attempting to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents. But he was detained after Chilean authorities said he lied to officials by providing authorities with “false flight plan data”.

Immigration authorities have detained 475 people, most of them South Korean nationals, when hundreds of federal agents raided the sprawling manufacturing site in Georgia where Hyundai makes electric vehicles. Steven Schrank, the lead Georgia agent of Homeland Security Investigations, said during a news conference that the raid resulted from a months-long investigation into allegations of illegal hiring at the site and was the “largest single site enforcement operation” in the agency’s two-decade history.
