Strike exchange continues as nuclear fears mount

Israel has hit Iranian government targets in Tehran in a series of strikes that follow a salvo of missiles and drones fired by Iran at Israel in the wake of the Trump administration’s massive strikes on Iranian nuclear sites the day before. The Israeli military also confirmed it struck roads around Iran’s Fordo enrichment facility to obstruct access to the site. The underground site was one of those hit in Sunday’s attack by the United States on three nuclear facilities. The Israeli military did not elaborate.

Sunken British superyacht raised

A British-flagged luxury superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing UK tech magnate Mike Lynch and six others, has completed its final trip to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese, a day after recovery crews finalised the complex operation to lift it out of the water. The white top and blue hull of the 56m (184-foot) Bayesian, covered with algae and mud, was kept elevated by the yellow floating crane barge off the port of Porticello, before being transferred to Termini Imerese, where it docked in the early afternoon.

Tehran open to more EU talks

European foreign ministers have urged Iran to engage with the United States over its nuclear program after high-level talks in Geneva aimed at opening negotiations for a new nuclear deal ended with little sign of progress. The talks between the foreign ministers of Germany, Britain, France and the EU with their Iranian counterpart sought to test Tehran’s readiness to negotiate despite there being scant prospect of Israel ceasing its attacks soon, diplomats said.

Israel hospital hit amid aerial assaults

Israel’s defence minister has overtly threatened Iran’s supreme leader after the latest missile barrage from Iran damaged the main hospital in southern Israel and hit several other residential buildings near Tel Aviv. Israel, meanwhile, struck a heavy water reactor that is part of Iran’s nuclear program. At least 240 people were wounded by the Iranian missiles, four of them seriously, according to Israel’s Health Ministry. The vast majority were lightly wounded, including more than 70 people from the Soroka Medical Center in the southern city of Beersheba, where smoke rose as emergency teams evacuated patients.

US: No decision on action in Iran yet

US President Donald Trump says he doesn’t want to carry out a US strike on Iran but suggested he stands ready to act if it’s necessary to extinguish Iran’s nuclear program, a looming decision that is creating divisions in the administration’s supporters, with some of his base urging him not to get the country involved in a new Middle East war.

British spy agency appoints first female chief

Britain’s real-life spies have finally caught up with the movies, with MI6 appointing its first female chief. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Blaise Metreweli will be the next head of the UK’s foreign intelligence agency, and the first woman to hold the post since its founding in 1909. Metreweli, 47, who is currently MI6’s head of technology, known as “Q”, joined the Secret Intelligence Service in 1999, and has spent most of her career in operational roles in the Middle East and Europe, the government said in a statement.
