The drive for global dominance (part one)
In July 2018, President Donald Trump delivered on campaign promises and introduced the first tariffs targeted specifically at Chinese goods. The scope of the original tax has since expanded to include products collectively valued at more than $US250 billion. Among the products hardest hit by what is essentially a tax are computers, furniture, automobile parts, electronics and plastics. The administration has mainly justified the action by pointing to the enormous trade deficit and the need to protect American industry. In a recent press briefing, Trump returned to a popular campaign line: that America has been taken advantage of. “We’ve had this abuse by many other countries and groups of countries that were put together in order to take advantage of the United States, and we don’t want that to happen,” he said.
