Following her 150th anniversary, the keepers of Big Ben must ensure the monument stays clean, timely and most importantly, does not stop at an inopportune moment. Political elections, and royal and state visits alike all pass below its famed clock faces. But as history continues to be made on its doorstep, workers behind the scenes must do everything from keeping pigeons at bay with a Harris Hawk patrol, to monitoring a rather worrying tilt.

Mayor arrested at detention centre

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has been arrested at a new federal immigration detention centre he has been protesting against. After being held in custody for several hours, Baraka was released shortly after 8pm and, after stepping out of an SUV with flashing emergency lights, told waiting supporters: “The reality is this: I didn’t do anything wrong.“ The mayor said he could not speak about his case, citing a promise he made to lawyers and the judge. But he voiced full-throated support for everyone living in his community, immigrants included.
