In 1897 the German merchant marine changed everything when North German Lloyd introduced the four-stacker ocean liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. For the next fifteen years the world’s great shipping companies vied with one another to introduce bigger and better ships and this maritime ‘arms race’ resulted in the creation of some of history’s greatest ships including RMS Olympic, SS France, RMS Titanic, HMHS Britannic, RMS Lusitania, RMS Mauretania, RMS Aquitania and more.

Thousands flee as deadly border clashes escalate

Fighting on the Thai-Cambodian border has extended into a third day and new flashpoints have emerged as both sides sought diplomatic support, saying they had acted in self-defence and calling on the other to cease fighting and start negotiations. Tens of thousands of people have sought refuge as border fighting escalate, heightening fears of an extended conflict with the total death toll reaching 32. The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting behind closed doors in New York, while Malaysia, which chairs the 10-nation regional bloc that includes both countries, called for an end to hostilities and offered to mediate.
