Trump fires job numbers chief

US President Donald Trump has fired the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer after data showed weaker-than-expected employment growth in July and massive downward revisions to the prior two months’ job counts. Trump accused McEntarfer, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, of faking the jobs numbers. There is no evidence to back Trump’s claims of data manipulation by the BLS, the statistical agency that compiles the closely watched employment report as well as consumer and producer price data.

Slow progress in US-Canada trade talks

A proposed US-Canada trade deal could still be weeks away, Ottawa’s chief negotiator has said, a day after US President Donald Trump imposed higher tariffs on imports from Canada. Trump - who had set an August 1 deadline for an agreement - signed an executive order increasing tariffs on Canadian goods to 35 per cent from 25 per cent on all products not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Prime Minister Mark Carney insisted on the talks to reset bilateral relations, saying Trump’s tariffs have upended decades-old trading and security ties. The negotiations, though, have so far produced little.

Court ruling a win for banks

The United Kingdom’s Supreme Court has overturned a landmark ruling on car finance commissions in a decision that is likely to ease the fears of banks about the extent of a redress scheme. Supreme Court president Robert Reed said the car dealers who sold the vehicles and arranged the finance did not owe fiduciary duties to customers, reversing a surprise Court of Appeal ruling that sent shockwaves through the motor finance industry. US-listed shares of UK banks rose after the court decision which was announced after the close of share trading in London.

Trump locks in sweeping tariffs

US President Donald Trump has slapped dozens of trading partners with steep tariffs ahead of a trade deal deadline, including a 35 per cent duty on many goods from Canada, 50 per cent for Brazil, 25 per cent for India, 20 per cent for Taiwan and 39 per cent for Switzerland. Trump released an executive order listing higher import duty rates of 10 per cent to 41 per cent starting in seven days for 69 trading partners as the 12:01 am EDT (0401 GMT) deadline approached. Some of them had reached tariff-reducing deals and some had no opportunity to negotiate with his administration.

Trump slams Russia, Moscow claims major advance

Russia says it has captured the town of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine after nearly 16 months of fighting, opening the way for potential further advances, with US President Donald Trump later threatening Russia with sanctions for its ”disgusting” behaviour against Ukraine. Russia’s Defence Ministry said in a brief statement its forces had “liberated” Chasiv Ya, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed as “disinformation”.
