No deal on prisoner exchange

Britain is not going to be looking at how to help Russia, a senior minister said when asked about the prospect of swapping pro-Russian politician Viktor Medvedchuk for two British fighters who were captured in Ukraine by Russian forces. The Britons appeared on Russian state TV on Monday and asked to be exchanged for Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin who is being held by the Ukrainian authorities. Asked whether a possible swap was something the government would get involved with, Britain’s Northern Ireland minister Brandon Lewis said: “We’re actually going through the process of sanctioning people who are close to Putin regime, we’re not going to be looking at how we can help Russia.“

New cars sales hit by chip shortage

British new car registrations have fallen to their lowest October level since 1991 after a 25% year-on-year drop as a lack of semi-conductor chips continued to hit the sector. Full-year sales are expected to stand at 1.66 million vehicles, only 1.9% higher than 2020, when COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions were in place, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said. A total of 106,265 vehicles were registered last month.

Tesla added to Uber London plan

Tesla cars will be available to Uber drivers in London looking to buy or lease a green vehicle as part of an incentive scheme to boost electric car use, the ride-hailing app says. Since Uber introduced a clean air fee, which adds three pence (four cents) to every mile of a passenger trip in London, more than £135 million has been collected for drivers to use towards environmentally-friendly models at discounted rates with partners such as Nissan and Kia.

G20 leaders visit Trevi Fountain

Leaders of the world’s biggest economies are taking in the sights in the Eternal City, visiting Rome’s Trevi Fountain before getting back to work hammering out a final statement on the environment. As the water gurgled behind them, the Group of 20 leaders each tossed a coin into the enormous Baroque-style fountain that has been the backdrop of many a film. Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the fountain, you’ll return to Rome. Not all members of the G20 participated in the coin toss; notably absent was US President Joe Biden.

No need for Plan B, says Boris

Boris Johnson sees no reason to activate the Government’s Covid Plan B, despite the high level of cases. Speaking to reporters during his trip to the G20 summit in Rome, the Prime Minister said only the Labour Party wanted tighter restrictions at the present time. His comments follow calls by the NHS Confederation and the British Medical Association, as well as a number of prominent scientists, for ministers to take steps to ease the growing pressures on the health service. Moving to Plan B for England would mean the return to working at home advice and the mandatory wearing of face masks, as well as the introduction of so-called vaccine passports.

NHS to offer vaccine at schools

Health teams will visit more than 800 schools across England this week to offer children aged 12-15 a coronavirus vaccine. Many more pupils returning to classrooms after the October half-term break can get a jab at school, NHS England said. Alternatively, children can make an appointment to visit a vaccination centre using the national booking system which has also been opened to this age group. NHS teams are set to visit hundreds of schools in the next week to offer children a jab.
